In some circles Danny is known simply as Dude. The name indeed embodies the spirit of our boy. The origin of this nickname is the result of a simple “Danny moment”. And while the story has no great punch line or yuk yuk factor (you had to be there)…. those who were there and lived it knew instantly ….a nickname was born. Note that some specifics have been purposely omitted to protect the innocent.

Many many moons ago…in a land far away (New Castle, PA)…a New Years eve party was planned. The year by best recollection was 1982. Danny was 11. By some estimates there were at least 50 people in attendance. Unfortunately a few Westminster students were unable to attend. ( No..the party did not occur at or near the college).

Danny and childhood friend Mark Caravaggio were the two youngest at the party. Most of the balance of the attendees were at least 10 years older (although not 10 years wiser). The party and location thereof was made possible by Susan. Through one of her associations (connections) this incredible setting had among other things: 14 guest rooms, big screen TVs (remember it’s 1982), a complete room of crystal, an indoor swimming pool, a marble appointed Library (complete with books) and a full size grand piano. We of course brought our own drum set, guitars, amps, PA system and lack of talent.

The party traveled from room to room. Music, laughter and craziness abounded. It was indeed an event for the ages. Young Danny and Mark were occasionally seen popping in and out…adorned in party hats, leighs, favors and wielding cups containing an unknown concoction. Some claim that alcohol was involved but to my knowledge this has never been confirmed. At some point in the night Danny bumped into (literally) the group comedian Brian. Without hesitation Danny uttered the now legendary words….”Sup dude…how ‘bout a prêt?” Translation: How are you doing my friend? Would you like a Pretzel? Brian who never missed an opportunity to bust a chop, immediately seized the moment, repeating the phrase over and over and over and over…well you get the idea. Thus the nickname was born. Later shortened to “what’s up dude” then again simply to Dude, the name stuck. Today…nearly 30 years later, the name continues to live on. As Dude stories are shared and passed on to future generations…the spirit and essence of that moment remain.

It is important to note that though one armoire packed with crystal collectibles did experience a harrowing moment, there was not a single casualty (worth mentioning). Not a single dish, wall, toilet or piece of furniture were harmed in the making of this party.

Also note that the accuracy of this recollection may not be entirely uhhhhh…. accurate. Rebuttal is encouraged.
